If you have been following along, I have a show of original pieces up. In the meantime, I thought I would make some of the items in the show available as archival prints and other products.

Here is how the original art piece looks (note: the frame is a little cockeyed in the photo, but not in real life -- it was how it looked on a wall for the photo shoot):

new direction and the last unicorn

"September Unicorn"

for sale here as an art print
if you are interested in purchasing the original, contact me via sales(att)LiseWinne.com
It is a 5 x 7 in an 8 x 10 gold frame
(symbolism for the piece is at the end of the post)

I have some big news to tell (on all fronts, including my music), but there are still some fantasy art pieces I am still listing in my shop.

So I will take some time to list them here before revealing my new direction and, for all intents and purposes, "my new life."

The "September Unicorn" original is available at a gallery at the moment. I can always take it out if you are interested in purchasing it. Contact me if you are interested: sales((att))LiseWinne.com.

Here is what the prints of it look like framed and on various products:

framed prints are available HERE
using the drop-down on that page to the right, this is a GG8 frame (in the copper bronze section)

If you like a little more bulk and detail to your frame,
here is one I found that is also in the drop-down:

As for symbolism:

I have noticed that when talking to clients, they identify with the symbolic meanings as describing themselves. What a great discovery! I will describe what that means, but first, the symbolism itself:

unicorn: purity, innocence, spiritual messages, enlightenment, magic. The unicorn has been known to be an independent creature of high intelligence who swoons at the sight of a fair maiden who is pure of heart, and to even fall asleep in her lap. The unicorn's horn has been known to purify water. The unicorn was described during Renaissance times as an extremely wild woodland animal that was independent and could not be tamed.

full moon: the feminine, peak of clarity in a subtle way, reflection on events, insight from dreams

vines: continuity, tradition, eternity (note here that the vines are going dormant)

I often find that a client who is attracted to this piece enough to purchase it is usually a woman who is independent and of high intelligence, cannot be tamed, feels an attraction to the occupation of healing, is perceptive, and who likes the company of other beautiful women like herself who are pure of heart. She is likely to be against the DAPL pipeline or other causes where pollution of water is an issue. She is reflective and clarifies matters for others in a non-ostentatious way, gets insight and creative ideas from dreams, and may respect tradition even if it might be going dormant within her soul for a time (or she may be breaking with tradition altogether depending on whether she wants to cycle back into the traditions prevalent in her life).

Artfire does a Regretsy, and movin' on up!

An advertisement on one of my ornament listings for a factory-made ornament
(note: this is something that was done by Artfire, not by me!)

(note on 4/27/15: Artfire added an ad-free option a week ago from all of the complaints from sellers about the ads. I took Artfire up on the offer to keep ads out of my shop, and I now feel okay about sending buyers there ... for now. I am still setting up my own e-commerce website, but at least I don't feel rushed, and can do it at my leisure. The rest of what I wrote, below, is the original post)

As many of you know (especially my loyal brick and mortar customers), I have been selling on Artfire for awhile now. The site was looking better than it ever has, it had gotten mobile friendly, and then, wham! Ads!

No, I did not want my listings for my handmade and fine art to be blasted with ads looking like an ad farm

And no, I will never put ads with handmade, fine art listings. And believe me, I could make this blog cluttered with ads too, and make good money doing so, but I have never taken that route because I don't believe it is respectful to my customers and it goes against everything small businesses and artists stand for.

I liken the ads on my listings to this scenerio:

I shop for food primarily from local farms. I actually drive to a lot of farms. I love the drive to the farm where I buy my eggs for three dollars a carton, for instance. They are lovely eggs by the way, all different colors, by all kinds of different breeds of chickens, and some of them even duck eggs, and so much fresher and better tasting than stale grocery store eggs. This farm is a place I love to go to because of the lovely scenery, where I can meet and pet the chickens who produce my eggs, where I chit-chat with the owners and where I can walk around admiring the wildflowers, horses and cows. Sometimes I see herds of deer mingled in with the cows, or off in the distance. You can see at least a hundred miles into the distance on sunny days. Imagine one day I pulled up and there was a big billboard for "cheap eggs, only a dollar, at your local Walmart" stuck to the chicken shack, and many other billboards and signs blocking the scenery, making it confusing about whether I was buying their farm eggs or ones from a factory farm. Ick!

Well, that's how I feel about the ads on my listings.

I had been planning to move to my own site in the autumn because I needed to offer wholesale and I couldn't do that on Artfire. I had to use it as a kind of e-mail service and explain everything, rather than have it spelled out in a listing (and imagine how much more confusing it is with these ads for wholesale buyers!). Anyway this has precipitated a need for a fast move, hopefully by next month. I spend my evenings copying listings when I am not trying to keep supplies of greeting cards and other art products stocked for brick and mortar shops in my area. So, I will let you know soon where I have moved to. Here are some other ads they plastered to my handmade ornament listing:

 NO THANKS!

As for other movin' on up plans:

I am also busy creating listings for Fine Art America because most of my customers contact me for print sizes I don't have listed, to get a custom size/order. Having a shop on Fine Art America will make it so much easier for ALL of my customers to order a myriad of sizes on different mediums, even huge 40 inch canvas prints. There is so much I can't do in my own home-based printing business; I have had to farm a lot out. This will give everyone a chance to own any size they want, and on any medium from archival canvas prints, to archival fine art paper, to posters for a kid's room, and greeting cards, and other products. This is a shop I was focusing on launching until Artfire distracted me, and now it's almost like a race to see which site gets done first, my e-commerce store or the Fine Art America store. The stores will probably be done in close proximity to each other!

As for Etsy, I am not invested in running any kind of major store there for my handmade or fine art. If you want to know why, this article explains my views. In movin' on up, I am by-passing venues. Etsy is being relegated to tiny experiments for different kinds of themes. Right now I have focused on a handful of owl listings.

Other things I am working on:
I have some Easter listings to show you soon.
I am doing illustrations for a book (someone else is the author). That's all I can share now.
I will be offering a lot more Victorian designs on the new website, but still keeping most products focused on story-book art, Celtic designs and Renaissance inspired art.

Just because I have been silent does not mean I haven't been working extremely hard!

Background on these pieces:
This is part of a series featuring a Renaissance style unicorn with millefleurs . It is inspired by The Lady and the Unicorn Renaissance tapestries (viewable HERE from wikipedia). The whole series of this kind of work can be found HERE (read from bottom to top to see the first to latest in the series). This is the third in the series, although I made a birthday card years ago in the same kind of vein (still unpublished).
- Painted around Valentines Day in 2013 (greeting cards can be used for Valentines Day for the unicorn lover).

There is also a hummingbird in this piece if you can find it.

New from my art studio!

The story about the piece: the greeting card design has been available since 2009. In order to make a print, I widened the design to include more meadow and also put in stars.

Here is how the greeting card looks:

So happy to be doing something else besides making holiday greeting cards (although this one may turn into an art greeting card at some point). Always check through this link and through this link if you are interested to see whether I make it into a greeting card.

At the moment, however, I am selling these as prints through my Artfire on-line shop. Oh, yes, moon included with the bird!

Intricate Heart, before a greeting card design, now a print

I have had this design available as a greeting card for quite awhile, but decided it would make a nice print too.

I have it for sale in my Artfire shop as a 5 x 7 print.

I have been in a number of treasuries on Artfire and on Etsy.

The treasuries on Artfire are:

I also made a treasury recently:

Tonight I am framing some work for a gallery exhibit.

White Feather original painting & print

White Feather original watercolor and ink
7" x 9"

This is part of the Windswept Doves series. I had a bad flu all last week and this is what I worked on while I was in bed. I always come back to the theme of doves or angels when I'm down. It was slow going because I was mostly sleeping.

When I scanned it in yesterday, it seemed bright, psychedelic and almost neon. I tried different approaches in the computer and came up with this one for a limited edition giclee print:

White Feather limited edition giclee prints
7" x 9"

I have it listed in 2 online shops: Etsy and Artfire (yes, I am presently opening another on-line shop-- more about that later, though I did notice that the one at Etsy presently has 0 views and the one on Artfire has 7 views and they were both put online at the same time... hmmm...).

Oak Leaf with Acorn Border

(note: copyright watermarks do not appear in actual art)

After my last project ("Pumpkin Faerie"... refer to last blog post), this was a relatively unambitious project. I had been out walking last weekend and picked up some acorns and a clump of oak leaves. I put them on a small table next to me as I finished the pumpkin faerie. They kept "speaking to me" out of the corner of my eye, as the saying goes, and as soon as I was done with the faerie, I started right in on this one.

Right now, I've got it for sale as a print in ye olde online store. (edited on 12/16/11 to say it is also available through my Artfire on-line store, which at prersent has the largest selection). I will probably be adding greeting cards & fine art gift tags in this design too at some point.

I also got a piece accepted into a juried art exhibit called "Black and White" at Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Center. The opening for the exhibit is October 1, 2010 from 5 - 7. And yes, I will be at the opening unless I get the miserable cold that everyone in my family has (ugh).

Here is the front of the postcard (© Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Center):

I've also spent some time making Etsy treasuries this month (it is a good way to network & support each other). Here are my recent treasuries. I show them in the order I did them, i.e. my first in the month to my latest (note: if there appear to be missing items, it is either because they sold or expired after the treasury was made):

The next one was made for a group of artists who I got to know through a particular forum (many of whom are overlooked by the company) to show the company that there are worthwhile items on Etsy than the sellers they constantly promote:

This next one was also made for these same group of artists:

This one was made late on the evening after my walk through the woods picking up oak leaves and acorns:

I've also been featured in treasuries by some of the same artists that I featured. I will share that with you next time.

Pumpkin Faerie

(note: copyright watermarks do not appear in actual product;
you may have to click on image to get the full effect)

A pumpkin faerie, just in time for autumn! The original is 14" x 18.25" and watercolor and ink. I am selling these as prints in ye olde online store.

This one took a long time. Since mid August! Interrupting my progress was a huge harvest, putting food by for the winter, a gig in Bolton Landing, applying for grant funded gigs, entering a juried show at Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Center (which I still haven't heard back from), painting frames (for a gallery exhibit) and painting more OSWOAs.

Autumn Tree with Knotted Roots and Knotted Border and Tree with Heart

This is the latest in the series of Celtic inspired art (particularly knotted trees with knotted borders). The Spring version is on this blog post.

At present, I have this up in my Etsy store as archival limited edition prints, but I will probably add greeting cards and tags in this design at some point. (edit on 12/16/11: it is also available through my Artfire on-line store where you don't have to be a member to buy and where I presently have the largest selection of my art).

The next piece is an original painting which is also presently for sale on Etsy. It is almost ACEO size (just a half inch wider in both directions). Which means: it is a 3" by 4" painting. It looks much better in real life (it has a crispness that you just can't get with a monitor).

Oh, yes, I am also in an Etsy treasury celebrating May Babies (of which I am one... or used to be when I was younger!). The treasury was curated by DiemDesignsJewelry.

Queen of Hearts

(note: copyright watermarks do not appear in actual art).

This is an old design (2005), but it is the first time that I am selling prints of her on-line (through Etsy).

2005 was the beginning of starting a theme of Renaissance-inspired art (the inspiration came to me as a flash when we were performing at the Killington Renaisssance Faire toasting our actor and musician friends at the Renaissance banquet). The Queen of Hearts was the first design in this endeavor. Previously, I was making art in any style and theme that took my fancy and I was finding that I felt like a perpetual student of styles (I have a masters degree in Art Education which explains why I am all over the place-- the more a teacher knows about each medium and style, the better she can teach it).

I am no longer teaching (I have replaced that profession with being a musician and visual artist), but I still have a tendency to scatter. Yet I always try to have a few pieces going in the Renaissance-inspired theme. Last year, I was in a 5 person invitational juried exhibit called "Once Again" at Lower Adironack Regional Arts Center in Glens Falls, NY where I featured my pottery, sculpture and painting in this theme.

One other reason for focusing on this theme was that in order to keep my sanity, I decided to focus on art that might go with my music: Renaissance, Celtic and originals about heartbreak and hope, spirituality and peace, shape-shifting and wings. Thus, 2005 was the year I also started those themes on my website gallery.

Here is the queen of hearts in detail. You'll notice that the queens' faces are not the same:

This is is what the greeting card looks like (a little different, eh? Maybe bringing out the gold tones more?):

And this is the back of the greeting card:

Spring Tree with Knotted Roots and Knotted Border

note: copyright watermarks do not appear in actual piece.

This piece was a joy to make. I finished it on April 15, but didn't get around to making any products from it until now. Prints, greeting cards & fine art gift tags are the latest products.

I was inspired by Celtic knots (again!) and this piece on the Gaia (forests forever) MYSPACE site. There are also two doves flying into the branches if you look very closely.

Angel Carrie Celebrates Life

note: copyright watermarks do not appear in actual piece.

I have a lot of new work to post, but in the meantime I am posting this older piece because I started to make some smaller prints of her.

She is part of a limited edition of 95.

The big 18" x 24" prints have been popular and make a bigger impact (especially when viewing in person as opposed to on-line), but I thought I'd try some smaller ones too at the end of the run of 95.

The smaller prints are up for sale for the first time at my Etsy on-line store (12/16/11 edit: they are also available at my Artfire on-line store).

Card Games Tree I and II

Note: copyright watermarks do not appear in actual art.

You never can plan anything in art. I originally designed this piece as a tag. Yup, that's right, very small with string through it, nothing too consequential. I acually painted the tree and border seperately. The original painting of the tree has red & black to match the border design. However, when I married the 2, I didn't like it. The tree did not differentiate with the border design enough (which made it look like a muddled mess). I fudged around with different experiments to try to resolve these issues. Then I found I liked it much more with the leaves turned a different color (to make it autumn-like while still keeping the playing card symbols). Success! I also decided to make prints from it. I will see if they make good tags, but for now I like them as prints.

Then I decided to try a different version. See below:

In this one, the tree has the same colors as the original painting while the border design does not.

The original mediums are: pen & ink, watercolor and a little oil based colored pencils to make the grass.

My relatives from my mother's side of the family are avid card players. Card games include bridge, Oh Hell and hearts with trumps. My grandfather insisted on games every night with all family members participating. Card symbols bring forth memories for me of good times with my family.
Both pieces are available in my Etsy store as small 5 x 7 prints. Perhaps there will be tags and other products with these designs after the date of this post. I still don't know what kinds of products will manifest for the brick and mortar stores that I am in.

Practicing and learning new music, new art show and new gig

This is a new picture of Jim and me last summer. The two of us are spending the evenings practicing and learning new material. We are performing New Year’s Eve with the band. I think we are also playing a Christmas venue, though not entirely sure.

I painted/worked a new piece the entire day and rushed downtown late before everything closed and found out I will be at the holiday art show at Lower Adirondack Regional Art Center. Yippee! This year I will have greeting cards and giclee prints (and maybe an original or two). Oh, yes, and CDs.
