"Streak", new art featuring a horse leaping

title: Streak
© 2018
acrylic painting on paper
8" x 10"
(note: the copyright watermark does not appear on any products)

Keeping up with the direction of my newest body of work is this piece, called "Streak". Actually the horse's name is Streak. He is leaping through the night sky.

I would categorize this piece as storybook art.

Symbolic meanings in the piece:

* horse: balance of wisdom and power
* white horse: transformation, beginning and ending, freedom without restraint, purity, sometimes a sign of wealth and prosperity
* white heart: purity in love
* stars: inspiration, intuition, dreams
* vines: the eternal, infinity

I have archival prints and products available for sale in this design HERE. The original, at the time of this writing, is also available for sale. I have it in a local gallery at the moment, framed in white with a vanilla colored mat. However, if it is still available, please feel free to inquire at the e-mail, sales((att))LiseWinne.com (you can purchase it with or without the frame).

I love how the tote bag came out in this design:

3 Autumn Trees in the Circle of Life

3 Autumn Trees in the Circle of Life
© Lise Winne (all elements including the Celtic knot)
available in my Artfire shop as a greeting card set HERE
may also be available in my Etsy shop in season

I had these greeting cards out in brick and mortar stores in the autumn; it is now December and I just got them listed on-line. Better late than never!

This is my attempt at a Celtic knot. More of my attempts can be viewed HERE. I like incorporating a bit of painterly aspects to the general knot (i.e., not just line drawings filled in with color).

Can be used for Samhain or someone born in the Autumn.

I also made some round tags with this design. More soon (I hope).

Autumn Tree of Life

Autumn Tree of Life
© 2012
available HERE as a greeting card
may also be available in my Etsy shop

In celebration of Samhain, Lughnasadh, harvest, autumn equinox, fall, Halloween, Celtic knots and trees (as well as tree huggers!).

The design is my own (including the knotted border, tree and cloudy sky).

I just finished this piece just yesterday. It was a miracle to get anything like this done since this year has been the most crisis ridden year of my life with barely enough time to catch my breath between unexpected (and emotionally catastrophic) events.

Devotion to Birds

"Devotion to Birds"
original india ink ACEO
size: 2.5" x 3.5"

sold
(if interested, other works somewhat like this one may be available through this link)

If you haven't the slightest idea of what an ACEO is, go HERE to read about it.

This is part of a series of Celtic-style Tree of Life images I have been making for several years. This one is the first in India ink.

If you have been following along on this blog since my last post HERE, then you'll know that I have not made any art since I became ill (on May 22). I tend to produce ACEOs when I want to experiment with a new style or when I'm unsure about a direction I want to pursue or when I'm lacking in energy (i.e. not feeling well enough to tackle a big project!).

tote bag design for gallery phase two

If you want to see phase one of this tote bag design, you can click here to be taken there.

So, here is version two (the version that the Valley Artisans Market Business committee chose) with "Cambridge, NY" underneath the Valley Artisans Market logo.

I did four versions of colors for you to choose. Please keep in mind that various monitors will display colors differently.

Here is the first:

Here is the second:

Here is the third:

Here is the fourth:

Keep in mind that the fourth version probably most resembles Valley Artisans Market's business card (art work by unknown):

My preference is for either the second or third version. I just don't think that the red (4th version) works as well in this case.

tote bag design for art gallery

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO COMMENT!
ALSO, CLICK ON PICTURES TO GET A LARGER VIEW
This is long, but I wanted to show you my entire process, please bear with me.

I'm writing (and showing the transformation of a design for a tote bag for a co-operative gallery/market). I chose to show you via this blog for the purpose of showing my fellow art co-op members and also to get comments from my blog readers if you would like to contribute to the conversation and let me know of your preferences. You can comment via this blog in the comment section or e-mail your preference. If you do comment in this blog, make sure your comment goes through! You can check to see if your comment went through by clicking on the headline after leaving your comment: you should find your comment underneath the story.

At a meeting at our co-op, someone suggested that I use the graphic from the current business card (some suggested I could transform it in some way). By the way, I have no idea who did the graphics for the card. I hope I don't step on any toes in my commentary! Here is the current business card:

Note: none of the actual biz card graphics have a copyright watermark : this is for on-line display only!

 Valley Artisans Market business card

As a business card, the graphics are fine because they are very small. I'm not crazy about the dots in the sky for a larger tote bag graphic. To some of our artists, it looks like sewing dots and the graphic in general has that quilt-like feeling. I like the quilt-like aspects, but not the sky. I come at it with a different perspective:  to me it is a bit of a cheap fast trick that graphic designers use to make the sky less stark (i.e. filling it in). You put in an invisible grid, put in some dots -- presto, it looks like it is daytime, done.

But I tried to make it work any way.

Here it is with just the writing underneath:

Valley Artisans Market business card with just the artwork and type

Up closer, the sky is really looking like it has too much bubbly. It is not square enough for a tote bag design and the writing is a bit hard to decipher.

So, then I stretch it to make it square:
Valley Artisans Market business card with artwork and type, stretched to a square

You can read it better, but boy those champagne bubbles are getting to me. Looks like they are in a synchronized take-off.

But, I like the writing because it isn't a type-face (you can tell in this stretched version by looking at the "T"s, especially the crossed part of them: they aren't alike: cool!). I'm just wondering if I should make the artwork square and put the lettering inside it in white. So I square up the picture:

Ooops, too mottled! So I dump in some solid red:

Before I go any further with this, I'm still not crazy about where this is going. The artwork is not entirely square, for one thing (you can see it in the left edge). The hills look less like hills and more like steep waterfalls. The trees are too bunched together. I'll have to get rid of those dots and replace them with something (and whatever I replace them with will probably not look right because it is someone else's art: they have their style; I have mine).

Okay, this is going to be more labor intensive than I thought.

I attempt to keep the same general idea, but make it my own. I replace the dots with birds (I know, I know, it looks like everything else I do... but, since it is one color and red is for the background, I can't put a white sky or clouds behind those trees without the trees getting lost...  and besides, birds go with trees, yes?).

You'll have to vote on one of these designs (there are also variables to consider, so I encourage reading through). All of these designs can have a thin border around the outside, like our business cards. Just let me know.

So, here are my first attempts in two colors (again, please note that the copyright watermark that runs diagonally is only for on-line purposes and will not appear in the design):

Valley Artisans Market tote bag #1 design in blue
(click on image to see a better, less blurry version)
Valley Artisans Market tote bag #1 design in red
(click on image to see a better, less blurry version)
You'll notice that the second one in red does not have the "celebrating 30 years" bit. I didn't know which way to go with it: without it, it is just about us, in any year, whereas with it, we are saying that we are a gallery co-operative that has been around a long time. Any message can be applied to either color bag.

I did use typeface even though I thought the biz card was pretty nice in a hand script (my hand script is not nearly so even and it also tends to lean over to the right, i.e. does not square up). Unlike our business card, the design also looks more like night time than day time. I also made the trees a little more transparent through the leaves and branches. Don't forget about what I mentioned just a moment ago: that I can also put a thin border around it like our business cards have on them.

So those were the first attempts.

For the second attempts, I wanted to put the type on the outside of the design. It probably looks closest to our business cards.

Here they are:

Valley Artisans Market tote bag #2 design in blue
(click on image to see a better, less blurry version)

Valley Artisans Market tote bag #2 design in red
(click on image to see a better, less blurry version)

The third attempt is not print-ready, but I wanted to show it just in case. I'm pretty busy, but could probably get it print-ready in a week or so if you are all crazy about it.

You'll notice that in the third attempts, I abandoned putting the type in the box with the art. I also eliminated the rows in front (opting for grass and flowers instead) and cut back on the birds:

(click on image to see a better, less blurry version)

Valley Artisans Market tote bag #3 design in red
(click on image to see a better, less blurry version)

They aren't masterpieces and I tried to keep to the original idea as the market/gallery is associated with the original business card graphic. I hope I have done it justice.

All of them are similar, so it is just a question of which one: #1, 2 or 3 in red or blue? I'll do what the majority wants. Again, leave a comment in the comments section of the blog or leave me an e-mail if you know it (or through my website by clicking here).

wedding cake with celtic inspired knots and doves

"Wedding Cake with Doves"
© 2011

It looks a little blurry on the page. You might have to click on the picture to see an unblurry rendition.

This is up as a greeting card in my Etsy store and my Artfire shop (for a change!). I've been favoring Artfire lately for most listings, but this goes with what I am doing at Etsy as well.

The original piece is a whopping 13" x 17" (that's the image area).

Here's a close-up:

"Wedding Cake with Doves" detail

This was one of those unfinished pieces hanging around since last June. Follow this link to a blog post from last June if you want proof (and you'll see plenty of other pieces waiting in the wings there too -- uh oh).

I can't say why I drop projects so readily only to finish them up at a much later date. I get inspired by new ideas and then can't seem to wait to finish pieces I am working on. So many other projects like this waiting in the wings! Ugh.

Oak Tree in Autumn II, original oswoa painting

I thought I was all done with oswoas, but the weather got hot again and I was once again inspired. For those of you new to my blog, an oswoa is an original work of art that is 4" x 6".

It started out as just an ink drawing with sepia ink. Then I decided to add watercolor. I thought at one point that it was a disaster, but then it seemed to come together with the dark blue background.

It's always a challange for me to paint so small!

Oak Tree in Autumn, original ACEO painting

Here is my latest attempt at another original painting ACEO. An ACEO is trading card size at only 2.5" x 3.5" (a challange especially because the tree inside the border is so tiny).

Check the availability of this piece at my ETSY STORE or ARTFIRE STORE.

I am planning on finishing more ambitious projects in the near future, but hot days in the summer seem perfect for mini paintings.

Autumn Tree ACEO

This is my latest attempt at painting an ACEO (my 4th try). An ACEO is a mini work of art at 2.5" x 3.5". As stated before, I am not entirely comfortable about painting anything smaller than a 4" x 6" painting, but I enjoy a challange and I thought I'd try one with my usual border (which made painting the tiny tree that much more painstaking!).

The designing took much longer than I expected for such a mini piece. It is part of a series I have been making about trees with knotted borders and knotted roots.

This is for sale (for the meantime) in my Etsy shop. (note: edit on 12/16/11: this piece is presently available in my Artfire shop, but can be requested in my Etsy shop if you have an account on Etsy -- Artfire has a guest check-out, so no need to have an account).

More mini paintings coming soon.

Tree with Heart and Sun

This is one of my larger pieces (18" x 24"). I have it for sale as a limited edition print in an 8.5 x 11 in my ETSY shop right away. I can also make it in bigger sizes. Just convo me through my Etsy shop.

I will also be selling it framed at Valley Artisans Market in the very near future and matted (without a frame) at Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Center for their holiday art show (Nov - Dec in their Lapham Gallery).

This is part of my knotted tree series. This time I decided to knot the sky too. For other instances of my knotted trees, go to this page on my website or just click the labels below to be taken to other blogs which feature this kind of art.

These pieces are very time consuming and labor intensive, which is why I'm not blogging as often, but I hope it is worth the wait.

Autumn Tree with Knotted Roots and Knotted Border and Tree with Heart

This is the latest in the series of Celtic inspired art (particularly knotted trees with knotted borders). The Spring version is on this blog post.

At present, I have this up in my Etsy store as archival limited edition prints, but I will probably add greeting cards and tags in this design at some point. (edit on 12/16/11: it is also available through my Artfire on-line store where you don't have to be a member to buy and where I presently have the largest selection of my art).

The next piece is an original painting which is also presently for sale on Etsy. It is almost ACEO size (just a half inch wider in both directions). Which means: it is a 3" by 4" painting. It looks much better in real life (it has a crispness that you just can't get with a monitor).

Oh, yes, I am also in an Etsy treasury celebrating May Babies (of which I am one... or used to be when I was younger!). The treasury was curated by DiemDesignsJewelry.

Spring Tree with Knotted Roots and Knotted Border

note: copyright watermarks do not appear in actual piece.

This piece was a joy to make. I finished it on April 15, but didn't get around to making any products from it until now. Prints, greeting cards & fine art gift tags are the latest products.

I was inspired by Celtic knots (again!) and this piece on the Gaia (forests forever) MYSPACE site. There are also two doves flying into the branches if you look very closely.

Card Games Tree I and II

Note: copyright watermarks do not appear in actual art.

You never can plan anything in art. I originally designed this piece as a tag. Yup, that's right, very small with string through it, nothing too consequential. I acually painted the tree and border seperately. The original painting of the tree has red & black to match the border design. However, when I married the 2, I didn't like it. The tree did not differentiate with the border design enough (which made it look like a muddled mess). I fudged around with different experiments to try to resolve these issues. Then I found I liked it much more with the leaves turned a different color (to make it autumn-like while still keeping the playing card symbols). Success! I also decided to make prints from it. I will see if they make good tags, but for now I like them as prints.

Then I decided to try a different version. See below:

In this one, the tree has the same colors as the original painting while the border design does not.

The original mediums are: pen & ink, watercolor and a little oil based colored pencils to make the grass.

My relatives from my mother's side of the family are avid card players. Card games include bridge, Oh Hell and hearts with trumps. My grandfather insisted on games every night with all family members participating. Card symbols bring forth memories for me of good times with my family.
Both pieces are available in my Etsy store as small 5 x 7 prints. Perhaps there will be tags and other products with these designs after the date of this post. I still don't know what kinds of products will manifest for the brick and mortar stores that I am in.
